In 1936, the Kentucky State Legislature adopted a League proposal, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife. In 1944, at the urging of the League, the now Department of Fish and Wildlife was made a separate agency of state government, which operates on the monies obtained by the sale of hunting and fishing licenses. In 1996, the League worked with the Kentucky State Legislature to pass house Bill 40 which is now known as Kentucky’s right to carry. In 1998, the League led the charge in protection of shooting ranges in Kentucky. The League again worked with Kentucky’s Legislature to pass House Bill 54 which became the shooting range protection act. The League successfully opposed, along with The Wildlife Legislative Fund of America and The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife, The Fund for Animals lawsuit, which could have put anti’s on the Fish and Wildlife commission. In 2005, the league asked Governor Ernie Fletcher to implement a committee to examine pipeline safety in Kentucky. Their first meeting was June 16. 2005 In March of 2005, the league again stood with Governor Fletcher on his Executive Order that addresses importation of Cervids into Kentucky. The league, in June of 2005, ask KDFWLR to stop Commercial Fishing on Barren River, Dewey, Rough River and Noun River lakes. Commercial Fishing on these bodies of water will cease in 2006. |
