President’s Message

As we embark on the New Year of 2012, it’s customary, as with any other year, to make a few New Year Resolutions.  Now most behavioral experts suggest that your resolutions should be modest in nature…that’s a great suggestion, you’ll feel a lot better by achieving rather than failing.

Being someone who is incessantly drawn to the outdoors, it’s more than predictable that my New Year Resolutions would revolve around my activities of the field and stream.
So here are my New Year Resolutions for 2012…

Take A Kid To The Outdoors
This should be fairly easy as I have two daughters. This Dad has already had them fishing in both fresh and saltwater, deer, goose and dove hunting in the past.  A little time camping, learning woodsman ship and just spending more days in the field will be the ticket.

Asian Carp-Whack’em & Stack’em
This most invasive of all fish species is over running our fisheries.  While there are numerous programs on the drawing boards of massive scale; it certainly can’t hurt for me and every sportsman and woman to try and make a dent in the Asian Carp population.  Believe it or not, they’re pretty tasty.

Train A New Dog
After years of admiring and hunting behind some really great dogs, I finally will be starting one of my own.  Pippa is a very well-bred English Pointer…I hope I can live up to her expectations.

Buy A New Gun
Just one?…Heck, buy as many as you can afford.  Opening the box of a new gun is like opening Christmas presents when you were a kid.  I love the feel of the warm wood, the smell of machinist’s oil and the snap of the action when you close the breech.  Need another reason, it’s your 2nd Amendment Right and it really gets under the skin of the liberals.  By the way, a new, old gun is a new gun.

Build A Fishing Rod
Many of you know I’m a pretty crafty guy.  I built a rod once in my younger years, but this time let’s go for the gold.  How about something like a 6 weight fly rod or quick action spinning rod.  There’s always something special to me about things that are not mass produced.

Brush Up On My Boy Scout Skills
Knot tying to be specific.  I have a friend that’s a fishing guide in Florida and I am always amazed at the speed and deftness of his knot tying.  Rope, monofilament, braided or the new fluorocarbons…knot tying is a basic skill of which every sportsman should be proficient.

Help The Homeless
While we all enjoy the bounty of the fin and fur, most of us have more than ample to share.  The fish and game we take is a tremendous source of protein.  There are multitudes of homeless and less fortunate in dire need of warm, nutritious meals; sportsmen can help make a difference.  I plan on donating at least one deer to a homeless shelter or Hunters for the Hungry.

Have you made your New Year Resolution(s)?  It’s not too late.
