State Squirrel Rife Competition

Kentucky State Squirrel Rifle Competition

The League of Kentucky Sportsmen Squirrel Rifle Competition has become a time-honored tradition for the youth of our state. Each year hundreds of children compete for honors in their districts and to represent their district in the state. The 2009 competition was a well fought battle where 1 point could be the difference between 1st and 2nd place.

The 8th District of the League has been the group to pursue for the last several years, 2009 was no different. With 11 classes represented, the 8th District took honors in 7 of those classes. These youth take their shooting seriously and their coaches and district chairman provide the instruction and support to make winners of them all.

The 6th District produced 3 class winners and the 3rd District 1 class winner. These districts are nipping at the heels of the 8th and hope to snatch some of those awards during the 2010 season.

In my opinion, any youth who expresses an interest in shooting and gun safety is a winner. As we battle government agencies and private organizations to retain our shooting and hunting rights, it is the youth of today who will continue this battle in the future. Our duties as members of the League are to mentor these youth in the proper procedures for handling firearms, managing game populations, and conserving/protecting the natural resources of our state. It is my hope that someone in each district, all 9 of them, steps up to become that special mentor to the youth in their area. Give our youth an opportunity to be a winner and a responsible future member of our League.
